longstanding member.
Dr, Blizzard was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and migrated to Canada in 1958.
He did his Primary and Secondary Education in Trinidad, and post-secondary at
the University of Edinburgh, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies
(Edinburgh), University of Western Ontario (M.D.), R.C.A.F. Institute of
Aviation Medicine (Toronto), and R.A.F. Institute of Aviation Medicine
(Farnborough, England).
Dr. Blizzard spent 16 years in the R.C.A.F./C.A.F. as a Flight Surgeon/Military
Jet Pilot, Senior Medical Officer and Deputy Commanding Officer of the Central
Aircrew Medical Board. He served at the National Defence Medical Centre and on
bases at Rockcliffe, Moose Jaw, RCAF Institute of Aviation Medicine (Toronto),
Borden, Goose Bay, North Bay, the Middle East, Surgeon General's Office,
Zimbabwe, and on several Nato Committees.
As a civilian he served for 12 years in the Directorate of Civil Aviation
Medicine, Department of Health and Welfare as a Senior Consultant, Chief of the
Civil Aviation Medical Unit and member of the Aviation Medical Review Board. In
addition, a licensed Commercial Pilot, he practised Medicine for 6 years in
Trinidad W.I. where in addition to running a busy practice, he pioneered in
Aviation Medicine and was Chairman and Instructor at a Flying Club.
During this period he presented the First Paper in Aviation Medicine in the
Commonwealth Caribbean "The Aerial Transportation of Patients". In addition he
was a Senior Medical Examiner for the U.S.A. and Aviation Medical Examiner for
the U.K., Canada, Trinidad and Tobago.
Dr. Blizzard has written several scientific papers and presented many lectures
in Aviation Medicine in Canada, the U.S., India, Greece, Zimbabwe, Trinidad and
Tobago. His work includes Government publications "Patient Care in Flight" and
"Flight Times and Flight Duty Times in Canada". His career has taken him to
places like Brazil, Kuala Lumpur, and as far as Star City outside Moscow where
Cosmonauts train and Baikonur in Khazakstan from where the Russian Cosmonauts
and now the U.S. Astronauts rocket in to Space.
Steve is :
(1) a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association.
(2) Member of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine
(Membership limited to 250 worldwide).
(3) Past President of the Civil Aviation Medicine Association.
(4) Past President of the Canadian Society of Aviation Medicine
(5) Past President of The Canadian Aerospace Medicine Aeromedical Transportation
Association.
(6) Member of Air Medical Physicians Association.
(7)Associate Member of the Airline medical Directors Association.
Dr. Blizzard continues to be a Consultant in Aviation Medicine.
Dr. Blizzard is now President of 410 Wing, Air Force Association of Canada and
Chairman of the Sponsoring Committee of 832 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.
